The Last Sentinel (2007) Survival Lesson
Survival Lesson: "The first rule of action is to survive by any means possible. Contact with the enemy should be avoided at all costs."
Synopsis: A soldier, the last of his unit, rescues a hot chick and together they set out to destroy a drone army that has virtually wiped out humanity.
Rating: 3/10. There are a couple of okay things about this movie. It's an interesting premise, so had the chance of being a good movie; the settings and props are pretty good; and Katee Sackhoff. Unfortunately, everything else is pretty dismal. The story itself makes no sense. As far as I can tell, their mission, which outside of movieland would have been impossible, was to infiltrate a massively patrolled enemy base to steal a disk from a computer in the enemy's nerve center, in order to find out how to destroy the nerve center? Just blow it up, like he does later in the movie and all of the drones stop working. Even if you didn't know that would stop the drones, what possible reason would you ever have to break into an enemy command and control center and not destroy it? It is ludicrous.
There is so many other things wrong about this movie, I'm just going to make a list:
- The drones have basically wiped out humanity, including the entire United States military, which would suggest that they have some significant technological and military capabilities. Yet there are dozens of scenes where they are at close range to the main characters and are unable to shoot them.
- This allegedly super capable army has a command and control center with like 4 computers that look like they are from the 70's.
- The super drone army's main base, with their critically important command and control center, has no guard towers and is only surrounded by a short fence with no barbed wire.
- The super drone army's super important command and control center has a door that can be kicked open.
- The main characters wear "charcoal coated Kevlar" capes that disguise their body temperature. Even if that made sense, how do they magically extend to also disguise the heat from their head, body, and legs, that aren't covered by the cape?
- Ridiculous romance scene.
- Multiple scenes where the main character armed with a melee weapon charges head on into an enemy firing line and wins the fight.
- Main character gets shot twice, sleeps for a bit, eats a little, and is fully functional.
- So many scenes with soldiers and drones standing out in the open in a fire fight, despite allegedly being well-trained, not a single one of them apparently has any notion of what cover and concealment are.
There is more, but that is probably enough examples to convey the point. The movie was also riddled with Confucius-like one-liners that I kind of liked but others may find irritating. Here is a sampling:
- "He who trains, wins!"
- "Consider yourselves dead already and the fear will go away. Then you'll be able to kill the enemy."
- "Never underestimate hate as a source of motivation."
- "Man does not live in peace."
